课程介绍

 

　　Thiscourseisdesignedtointroducestudentstotheissuesofenergyinthe21stcentury–includingfoodandfuels–whichareinseparablylinked–andwilldiscussenergyproductionandutilizationfromthebiology,engineering,economics,climatescience,andsocialscienceperspectives.Thiscoursewillcoverthecurrentproductionandutilizationofenergy,aswellastheconsequencesofthisuse,examiningfinitefossilenergyreserves,howfoodandenergyarelinked,impactsontheenvironmentandclimate,andthesocialandeconomicimpactsofourpresentenergyandfoodproductionanduse.Aftertheintroductorylectures,wewillexaminetheemergingfieldofsustainableenergy,fuelandfoodproduction,emphasizingtheimportanceofdevelopingenergyefficientandsustainablemethodsofproduction,andhowthesenewtechnologiescancontributetoreplacingthediminishingsuppliesoffossilfuels,andreducetheconsequencesofcarbondioxidereleaseintotheenvironment.Thiscoursewillalsocovertheimportanceofcreatingasustainableenergyfutureforallsocietiesincludingthoseofthedevelopingworld.LectureswillbepreparedanddeliveredbyleadingUCSanDiegoandScrippsInstitutionofOceanographyfacultyandindustryprofessionalsacrosstheseareasofexpertise.
