Large-scalebiologyprojectssuchasthesequencingofthehumangenomeandgeneexpressionsurveysusingRNA-seq,microarraysandothertechnologieshavecreatedawealthofdataforbiologists.However,thechallengefacingscientistsisanalyzingandevenaccessingthesedatatoextractusefulinformationpertainingtothesystembeingstudied.Thiscoursefocusesonemployingexistingbioinformaticresources–mainlyweb-basedprogramsanddatabases–toaccessthewealthofdatatoanswerquestionsrelevanttotheaveragebiologist,andishighlyhands-on.Topicscoveredincludemultiplesequencealignments,phylogenetics,geneexpressiondataanalysis,andproteininteractionnetworks,intwoseparateparts.Thefirstpart,BioinformaticMethodsI(thisone),dealswithdatabases,Blast,multiplesequencealignments,phylogenetics,selectionanalysisandmetagenomics.This,thesecondpart,BioinformaticMethodsII,coversmotifsearching,protein-proteininteractions,structuralbioinformatics,geneexpressiondataanalysis,andcis-elementpredictions.Thispairofcoursesisusefultoanystudentconsideringgraduateschoolinthebiologicalsciences,aswellasstudentsconsideringmolecularmedicine.Bothprovideanoverviewofthemanydifferentbioinformatictoolsthatareoutthere.ThesecoursesarebasedononetaughtattheUniversityofTorontotoupper-levelundergraduateswhohavesomeunderstandingofbasicmolecularbiology.Ifyou'renotfamiliarwiththis,somethinglikehttps://learn.saylor.org/course/bio101mightbehelpful.Noprogrammingisrequiredforthiscourse.
