EnglishCompositionIprovidesanintroductiontoandfoundationfortheacademicreadingandwritingcharacteristicofcollege.Attendingexplicitlytodisciplinarycontext,youwilllearntoreadcritically,writeeffectivearguments,understandthewritingprocess,andcraftpowerfulprosethatmeetsreaders’expectations.Youwillgainwritingexpertisebyexploringanareaortopicinwhichyouwouldliketogainexpertise(ahobby,trade,profession,discipline,etc.).Yourmajorwritingprojectswillbeaboutyourownselectedtopicandwillbedraftedandrevisedinsequencedstages:avisualanalysis(600-800words);acasestudy(1000-1250words)andanOp-Ed(500-750words).Yourwritingwillbecentraltothecourseaswecreateaseminar/workshopstructurewithpeerresponseandselectedinstructorfeedback.Twooverarchingassumptionsaboutacademicwritingwillshapeourwork:1)itistransferable;2)itislearnable.Beinganeffectiveacademicwriterinvolvesaskingmeaningfulquestionsandengagingincomplexdialoguewithtextsandideas.Theseskillsareusefulacrossvirtuallyallacademicdisciplinesandtheyprovideavaluablemeansformakingsenseofnon-academicexperiencesaswell.Perhapsevenmoreimportant,though,isthatlearninghowtowriteeffectivelydoesnotrequireinspirationorgenius,buthardwork,reflection,andfeedback.Thismeansthat,withpractice,dedication,andworkingwithothers,youcanbeaneffectiveacademicwriterandcontributeyourideastoimportant,ongoingconversations.
